Biography
About Adam Berner
With over 30 years in the legal field, my journey as a lawyer has been marked by a commitment to fostering resolution and understanding through Collaborative Law and Mediation. Unlike traditional legal paths, something about mediation and helping people in conflict find a better, more productive way to resolve their differences attracted me to Mediation and Collaborative law.
While starting my career at a notable Fifth Avenue matrimonial litigation firm, I volunteered as a court mediator, witnessing firsthand the limitations of litigation in family disputes. These experiences reinforced my belief in the effectiveness of mediation and collaborative efforts over courtroom battles, prompting me to focus on building skills that aid family cohesion.
I am proud to be among those who embraced mediation and collaborative law as primary professions. Our firm, Berner Law & Mediation Group, established nearly three decades ago, aims to provide environments where individuals can resolve differences through cooperative problem-solving rather than adversarial processes.
Throughout my career, I have dedicated myself to fostering successful resolution practices while continuously enhancing my knowledge and abilities. I have studied with renowned mediation trainers across the United States, enriching my understanding with diverse methodologies. My education, including degrees in law and accounting and post-graduate studies at NYU School of Social Work, equips my practice with both the analytical skills necessary for complex legal and financial matters and insights into the emotional dynamics that often underlie disputes.
My firm’s mission is to assist clients in navigating conflicts to discover optimal solutions and maintain healthy relationships. My ongoing dedication to mediation and conflict resolution has led to roles as an educator and trainer. For over 20 years, I have served as an Adjunct Professor at Cardozo School of Law, and I also offer training sessions to attorneys, judges, and other professionals, frequently presenting at bar association events throughout New York and New Jersey.
As a leader in this evolving field, I have served as Past President of the Family & Divorce Mediation Council of Greater New York, and I held founding positions with the Collaborative Divorce Association of North Jersey, the New York Association of Collaborative Professionals, and the New Jersey Council of Collaborative Practice Groups. Additionally, I served as the Director of Training at the New York Center for Interpersonal Developments’ Mediation & Conflict Resolution Training Institute and instruct various panels and workshops, including the NJ Institute for Continuing Legal Education’s 40-hour divorce mediation training.
Beyond my professional endeavors, my wife and our four children remind me constantly that conflict resolution skills are always evolving and need nurturing both professionally and personally.
