Biography

About Barry D. Mann

Barry Mann has been practicing real property law with Manning Fulton since graduating from the UNC School of Law at Chapel Hill in 1982. For many years, Barry was fortunate to work with and learn from Charlie Fulton, arguably the preeminent real property practitioner in North Carolina prior to his retirement in 2007. Today, due to such mentoring, his years of experience, a great client base and an ongoing participation in the activities of various real property associations, Barry has one of the most well-established and diverse real property practices in the entire state. With a practice based primarily in the Triangle, Barry handles real estate transactions that range from the routine to the complex, many of which have changed the physical landscape of Raleigh and surrounding areas. Specifically, Barry represents commercial real estate developers and investors through all phases of the development of a variety of commercial properties – from land acquisition and financing to construction, development, leasing, management and sale of projects. The type of projects on which Barry works includes raw land assemblages, small and large office buildings, individual warehouses and warehouse projects, multi-family (apartment) projects and retail shopping centers. Some of the projects with which Barry has been actively involved include many of the downtown office buildings in Raleigh, Brier Creek in Raleigh, Imperial Center in Durham, Research Tri-Center in Durham, Town Hall Commons in Morrisville, and Albemarle Plantation in Hertford. Workouts, loan modifications and re-negotiations also constitute a significant portion of Barry’s practice. Barry enjoys both a professional and personal relationship with many of the clients he represents, a list that includes both large national or regional developers as well as several local developers. At one time or the other, Barry has assisted virtually every large financial institution with a presence in North Carolina, as well as every title insurance company that issues title insurance coverage in the state. He especially enjoys working with local professionals such as doctors, accountants, real property investors and other lawyers with respect to their real estate investments and needs. Barry was raised in a system at Manning Fulton where real property attorneys were required to learn the particulars of title examinations. As a result, he possesses an expertise in all aspects of title work and is often employed by title insurance companies and clients to ascertain, evaluate and certify the status of title and to resolve title questions and issues. Barry is also frequently requested to serve as a substitute trustee on, and to be involved in, significant foreclosure actions Barry was previously a member of the Real Property Council of the Real Property Section of the North Carolina Bar Association, and served as the Section’s Chairman in the 2003-2004 year. During the time of his service with the Council, Barry fought against, and was instrumental in limiting, the use of non-lawyers in the residential real property practice. He has also been a participant in and served as President of the Wake County Real Property Lawyers Association, an active local real property law association based in Raleigh. Barry is currently the Vice-Chair of the Paralegal Certification Board of the North Carolina State Bar, the organization that to date has certified over 5,000 paralegals who have met certain minimum standards. He has spoken at various continuing education programs geared to attorneys, paralegals, bankers and real estate brokers. Barry has been recognized by his peers in various publications as a leading practitioner in his field. InBusiness North Carolina, Barry was named to its Legal Elite in real estate law from its inception in 2002, was recognized as the best real property attorney in the State of North Carolina in 2005, and subsequently inducted in that publication’s Hall of Fame. He has been recognized by Best Lawyers© in the area of real property (1999-2015) and has been selected as Best Lawyers© Raleigh Real Estate Law "Lawyer of the Year" (2014). He also appears in North Carolina Super Lawyers (2005-2015) which includes being named as one of the top 100 lawyers in the state (2010). Barry carries the AV rating with Martindale-Hubbell. Barry is ably assisted in his practice by some of the best real estate paralegals anywhere including Teri Bowling, the recipient of the inaugural Distinguished Paralegal Award given by the Paralegal Division of the North Carolina Bar Association in 2009 and a long-time instructor in the Meredith College Paralegal Program, and Nancy Simpson, the lady who first taught Barry how to examine and summarize titles.
