Biography

About Herman C. Clause

I was born in Prairie Basse, in rural St. Landry Parish in Louisiana, in 1942, the son of share croppers. Two years later, my parents bought a small farm in Carencro, Louisiana, where I grew up. I chose to live my entire life in rural Carencro.

After graduation from Carencro High, I attended University of Southwest Louisiana (now University of Louisiana at Lafayette) and graduated in 1964 with a BA degree with Highest Distinction. I received my LLB (now Juris Doctor) from Tulane University, New Orleans Louisiana in 1966 and was admitted to the Louisiana Bar.

I practiced law in Lafayette, Louisiana until 1984 when I became the Commissioner for the 15th Judicial District Court for Acadia, Lafayette, and Vermillion Parishes. I served as Commissioner until I was elected 15th District Judge in those same parishes in 1996. I sat as judge until I retired in 2015.

I also served 12 years on the Lafayette Parish School Board. For many years, I was an active member of 4-H club as well as serving as Board of Director of Acadiana District Junior Livestock Show and received the “Friend of 4-H” award in 1979 and 1984. I have been involved in many community, church, and civic organizations throughout my life.

I am married to former Carlena Schexnayder and am father to 7 children, 20 grandchildren and 8 great grandchildren. I enjoy many hobbies such as reading, cycling, golf, and fishing.

After a number of months into retirement and staying very busy with hobbies and “honey do’s” I realized I missed the justice system. I decided to join two attorneys who I have respected for many years – Barry Sallinger and Allyson Prejean. Together we bring a combined 105 years of legal experience to the Acadiana community.
