She has argued more than 40 cases in the state and federal appellate courts, and has been the principal brief-writer in at least 100. Johanna is a leader of state and local legal associations. She was the 2020 President of the San Diego County Bar Association, which serves nearly 10,000 members of the San Diego legal community. In 2023, Johanna was appointed to serve as Chair of the Appellate Lawyer Representatives Committee of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit; she has served as a member of the committee since 2019. In August 2020, she was appointed to serve as a member of the Executive Council of the National Conference of Bar Presidents, which provides high-quality programming, information, training and resources to leaders of state, local, and specialty bar associations across the country. And, in 2021, she began a three-year term on the California Lawyers Association’s Committee on Appellate Courts, which promotes excellence, professionalism, and civility among appellate practitioners, and provides opportunities for connection, education, and pro bono representation in appellate practice.
