John Margie

John is a partner at Margie Strub Construction Law LLP with more than twenty years of experience providing legal services, exclusively in construction and infrastructure law, to help clients manage and mitigate risks and resolve disputes.

John has represented every party in the construction pyramid including public and private owners, contractors, trades, and suppliers and he represents clients from across the construction industry including small and national to international companies. His experience ranges across a wide variety of projects from luxury home construction to condominiums, industrial and commercial projects, road and rail works, hospitals, power plants, solar and wind farm projects, and other infrastructure projects. John has extensive expertise in multiparty construction disputes and has been involved in delay claims, cost overrun disputes, changes, construction lien claims, breach of trust claims, surety bond claims, and bidding and tendering claims. John also has experience in domestic and international arbitrations and mediations.

John is a certified specialist in construction law by the Law Society of Ontario. He is recognized since 2019 in Best Lawyers, and also in the L'Expert Leading Infrastructure Lawyer Directory and the Canadian L’Expert Directory. John is also a Fellow, past Governor, and Chair of the Website Committee of the Canadian College of Construction Lawyers.

John has extensive expertise in the application and the interpretation of the Construction Act which he gained, in part, from his mandate as LawPro preferred counsel defending lawyers and rectifying errors under the Construction Act. John is the co-author of the Simplified Guide to the Modernization of the Construction Lien Act, the first in a series of three plain language guides intended to help industry participants and lawyers navigate the recent extensive amendments to the Construction Act. John has also written a number of articles related to liens and bankruptcy, project trust accounts, and lien and trust claims. John is guest lecturer at the University of Toronto construction law course and the York University, Osgoode Hall LL.M. in Real Estate, Construction Law Module and a frequent speaker at industry conferences on various construction topics.
