Over 37 years representing municipalities defending cases, including class actions, on behalf of police and public entities alleging violations of civil rights as guaranteed by the First, Fourth, Fifth, Eighth and Fourteenth Amendments to the United States Constitution. Cases include claims of jail suicide, jail denial of medical care for serious medical needs, police pursuit, false arrest, wrongful conviction and malicious prosecution, excessive force by police officers including officer involved shootings, and failure to properly train police officers. Defense of Public Entities in Land Use and Zoning Related Matters – alleged deprivation of plaintiff’s Fifth Amendment rights asserting an unconstitutional taking of property without just compensation by virtue of application of zoning laws and ordinances. Defense of Administrative Appeals to Common Pleas Courts regarding zoning and permit related issues.

Lead defense counsel in a number of class action and collective action matters including civil rights claims, FACTA, FLSA, and municipal sewer defect litigation.

Defense of Employers – (private and public entities) in claims asserted by former or current employees alleging violations of Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964, Age Discrimination in Employment Act, Americans with Disabilities Act, Family Medical Leave Act and Ohio Civil Rights Act.

Representation of civil defendants in federal and state courts throughout Ohio; lead counsel trial experience in both state and federal courts.

Representation of clients in the sale of businesses and other business-related formation and transactions, including real estate transactions.

Representation of insurance risk pools in coverage matters, including declaratory judgment actions.

Personally handled and argued hundreds of state court appeals, including appeals in the First, Second, Third, Fifth, Sixth, Seventh, Eighth, Ninth, Tenth and Eleventh Districts and Ohio Supreme Court. Two 7-0 victories in Ohio Supreme Court, out of approximately 9 arguments, making new law in both.

Lead counsel and argued over 100 public entity appeals to the U. S. Court of Appeals for the Sixth Circuit, including several successful qualified immunity appeals on behalf of public officials. Defended successfully against a number of petitions for writs of certiorari.
