He graduated from Wayne State Law school in 1988 and was admitted to practice in state and federal courts the same year. He served on the Board of Directors of the Free Legal Aid Clinic while in law school. He was the President of Grateful Home in Detroit, a shelter for battered woman and their children which is now operated by the Detroit Rescue Mission Ministries.
