Louis Belleau Ad. E.

Louis Belleau has been a member of the Quebec Bar since 1981, practicing in the field of criminal and penal law. Having served as Crown counsel from 1981 to 1983, Mr. Belleau then practiced at the firms of Silver Braun, Filteau Belleau and Shadley Battista before opening his own office in 2012. Mr. Belleau has appeared before all courts of criminal jurisdiction in the Province of Quebec and, on occasion, in jurisdictions outside Quebec.

He appeared many times before the Supreme Court of Canada notably as counsel for the Quebec Bar in the landmark case of Maranda v. Richer, and was twice designated by the Court to appear as amicus curiae in the cases of R. v. Bellusci and R. v. Burke.

In 2004, Mr. Belleau was the recipient the Merit of the Quebec Interprofessional Council and the Prix Reconnaissance of the Montreal Association of Criminal Defence Lawyers (Association des avocats de la défense de Montréal). He was awarded the Merit of the Quebec Bar and was designated Advocatus Emeritus in 2005. In 2014, the Quebec Association of Criminal Defence Lawyers (AQAAD) awarded him the Antonio Lamer Career Achievement Award. He has been listed in Best Lawyers in Canada since 2006 and was designated Lawyer of the Year for 2019 and 2021 in his jurisdiction in the field of criminal law. He became a Fellow of the American College of Trial Lawyers in 2012.

Mr. Belleau has published several articles on various subjects related to criminal law and has taught criminal law at the School of the Quebec Bar. He served as counsellor and then Vice-President of the Montreal Association of Criminal Defence Lawyers and was President of the Quebec Bar’s Committee on Criminal Legislation.
