About Mark A. Hoffman

Dr. Mark A. Hoffman, M.S., M.D., J.D., LL.M., M.Bioeth., M.B.A., is an internationally recognized physician and leading plaintiff's lawyer who joined Ross Feller Casey in 2014.At Ross Feller Casey, Dr. Hoffman handles medical malpractice cases with a focus on mass-tort litigation involving dangerous pharmaceutical drugs and medical devices. Prior to joining Ross Feller Casey, he was instrumental in successfully litigating and resolving mass-tort actions involving Denture Cream, Vioxx, and other pharmaceutical and medical devices. His background in the biological sciences and medicine was highly valued, and he was key in developing several of the scientific theories in these cases.In all, his work on those and other mass-tort cases has led to the recovery of more than $100 million for his clients.Dr. Hoffman, as lead or co-counsel, also has an impressive list of seven- and eight-figure victories in a wide range of other cases, from medical malpractice to birth injury to civil rights litigation.Dr. Hoffman received his undergraduate degree with honors from Amherst College, his M.D. degree from Columbia University College of Physicians & Surgeons, and his J.D. and Master of Bioethics degrees from the University of Pennsylvania Law School and School of Medicine, respectively. He trained in general surgery at Harvard University; pediatric surgery at the Children's Hospital of Boston and the University of Toronto's Hospital for Sick Children; and transplant surgery at Cambridge University in England under Sir Roy Calne.Dr. Hoffman received an LL.M. in Trial Advocacy from Temple University Beasley School of Law, where he continues to serve on the Adjunct Faculty. He also is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Surgery at the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences in Bethesda, MD. He recently earned his M.B.A. degree from Drexel University's LeBow College of Business, with a particular interest in innovative business models, value-stream mapping, statistics and economics, and valuation.Prior to attending law school, Dr. Hoffman was an academic liver and kidney transplant surgeon and general pediatric and trauma surgeon at Tufts University and the Kiwanis Trauma Institute in Boston, MA. He was a member of the U.S. Army Reserves from 1988 to 2002. From 1990 to 1991, Dr. Hoffman served as the Chief of Pediatric Surgery at the Walter Reed Army Medical Center and Consultant Surgeon at the National Naval Medicine Center during Operations Desert Shield and Storm. His last military assignment prior to leaving the Army at the rank of Colonel (O-6) was as a Military Academy Liaison Officer (MALO) to the United States Military Academy at West Point. He also served on the military academy interview committee for then Senator Rick Santorum, and interviewed West Point admission candidates from metropolitan Philadelphia area high schools.From 1991 to 1996, Dr. Hoffman served on the faculty of the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine and as an attending surgeon at the Children's Hospital of Philadelphia. He is internationally recognized for his research and clinical work in pediatric trauma, hepato-biliary and liver transplant surgery, upper gastrointestinal surgery, and the surgical management of complex congenital malformations. He has authored or co-authored more than 50 articles and book chapters on a variety of medical topics, and is currently an invited author for textbook chapters on cardioethics and transplantation.He is admitted to the practice of law in Pennsylvania, New Jersey, New York, and Massachusetts, and is a member of the bar associations of Pennsylvania, New Jersey and New York.
