About Richard A. Getty
Richard A. Getty, Managing Member, was born in Natrona Heights, Pennsylvania on July 22, 1946. He was admitted to the Bar in Ohio in 1974 and in Kentucky in 1977. He is also admitted to practice before the United States Supreme Court, United States Court of Appeals for the Sixth Circuit and before the District of Columbia Circuit, as well as the District Courts for the Northern District of Ohio, Eastern and Western Districts of Kentucky, Western District of Michigan and District of Colorado. Mr. Getty received his undergraduate degree from the University of Kentucky (B.A. 1971) and graduated from the University of Kentucky College of Law (J.D. 1974). He was a member of Phi Delta Phi Legal Fraternity, the Order of Barristers, and served on the staff of the Kentucky Law Journal (1972-1974) as a Candidacy Editor. He was a member of the National Moot Court Team (1973-1974) and served as the President of the Moot Court Board.
Mr. Getty has taught numerous civil procedure and trial advocacy courses, including serving as a faculty member of the National Institute of Trial Advocacy. He has been listed in the Best Lawyers in America, Business Litigation, and currently serves on the Editorial Board of the RICO Law Reporter. He co-authored "Kentucky Corporation Law and Practice," Prentice-Hall (1992), and has written numerous articles, including "Recent Changes in the Kentucky Securities Law," 61 Kentucky Law Journal 1003 (1973); "The Civil RICO Action -A New Weapon for Use in Securities and Commercial Fraud Cases," Matthew Bender & Co., Inc. (1984); "The Preparation of a Civil RICO Action," 6 RICO Law Reporter 1 (July 1987); "Is It The Result That Really Counts? An Analysis Of Holmes v. SIPC," 15 RICO Law Reporter 4,683 (April 1992). Mr. Getty is a Member of the Cleveland Metropolitan, Louisville, Fayette County, Ohio State and Kentucky Bars, as well as the American Bar Association.
After returning to Kentucky in 1977, Mr. Getty was a partner in the firm of Greenebaum, Doll & McDonald for ten years, practicing in both Louisville and Lexington, Kentucky, before he opened the Lexington office for what was then Frost & Jacobs and served as a partner with that firm for seven years. In 1994, Mr. Getty merged his practice with the second largest firm in West Virginia, forming Bowles, Rice, McDavid, Graff, Love & Getty.
In 1998, Mr. Getty formed his own firm, the present form of which is The Getty Law Group, PLLC. The Getty Law Group includes Mr. Getty and eight other attorneys, all of whom have achieved academic success while in undergraduate school or law school in various ways, such as obtaining Order of the Coif status or serving on their respective Law Reviews.
Mr. Getty limits his trial practice to business and commercial litigation with an emphasis on mineral litigation, equine litigation, securities litigation, and construction litigation. He also devotes some time to transactional work, including the representation of companies based in Europe, principally Italy, who have moved or opened operations in North America. He is fluent in Italian. Mr. Getty serves as principal trial counsel for matters on behalf of two large Kentucky-based financial institutions, a significant number of owners and breeders involved in the thoroughbred business, and a number of coal producing or mineral holding entities involved in the coal industry. He has obtained a significant number of multi-million dollar jury verdicts and has successfully defended multi-million dollar commercial/business litigation disputes on behalf of a number of significant businesses or industries located in Kentucky or other parts of the United States. He has also acted as lead counsel in a number of class action litigation matters, including the certification of the class of Vioxx consumers seeking reimbursement of monies spent on purchasing the drug - the first class of its kind certified in the United States.
In his spare time, Mr. Getty enjoys bird hunting, including an annual pheasant hunt in the private reserve of his Italian relatives in the Appennini of Emilia-Romagna. He has also hunted cinghiale/wild boar in Tuscany. He also enjoys sparring/boxing at a local gym where he helps instruct and train young underprivileged boys. Mr. Getty was an amateur boxer in his youth.
