Philosophy
As the son of a coal miner, Rusty knows how difficult it was for working class people to assert their rights against big corporations. This upbringing, along with his Christian beliefs, has guided him throughout his distinguished legal and political career. His practice focuses primarily on representing regular people who need help having their voice heard in the legal system.
Rusty is well-known in the Charleston community and throughout West Virginia as an advocate for working class people and as a supporter of many non-profit initiatives.
Personal Life
He was raised in Madison, Boone County, West Virginia. His mother is a retired real estate agent and lives in Charleston. His father, a union coal miner, died in 1987.
Rusty is married to Robin and they live in Charleston, West Virginia. He has two stepsons, Matthew and Adam, both are graduates of Marshall University and are practicing RNs. His daughter, Alexa, is a college student.
Rusty was a member of the Marshall University Men’s Swim Team and while a law student at West Virginia University, he was a member of the University’s Crew Team (Rowing). He has the distinction of being the only student athlete in West Virginia to compete in two different college sports at each university.
He is a lifelong outdoorsman and although his busy career limits all of the types of hunting he enjoyed as a teenager, he finds time to deer hunt for one week each fall and estimates that he is on the water approximately sixty days per year fishing for small-mouth bass. Still athletic, he is a huge tennis fan and plays virtually every day.
