Sean P. Kelly

Sean P. Kelly has practiced exclusively in the area of family law and divorce for his entire career as a lawyer, which began in 1994. Having "grown up" in the field, Sean has extensive litigation experience and a significant knowledge and understanding of the law. One benefit of his years of litigation experience is that it affords a seasoned trial lawyer like Sean many more opportunities to achieve fair and equitable settlements for his clients. His substantial trial experience, coupled with his opponents' awareness of his willingness to take cases to trial, opens the door to the world of productive settlement discussions. Sean's style of practice, integrity and demeanor have earned him the respect of his adversaries and the judges before whom he appears, and in February 2009 Washingtonian Magazine recognized him as one of the D.C. area's best divorce lawyers. Washingtonian Magazine also named Sean to its Top Lawyers list for 2011-12, 2013-14, 2014-15 and 2015-16. Sean was also included in The Best Lawyers in America beginning in 2011 and has been selected for inclusion each year since, and has been named to Super Lawyers in Virginia and/or Washington, D.C. every year since 2007.

During his 24 plus years in practice, Sean has litigated and/or settled all types of family law cases, including custody and visitation, equitable distribution of assets, and spousal and child matters. He has been involved in complex business valuation cases and the tracing of assets, often working closely with experts in forensic accounting. No matter how big or small a case may appear to be, Sean diligently represents each of his clients and ardently strives to achieve each client's specific goals.

Sean also has a long history of service to his profession. Sean was selected to and served on the Virginia State Bar Council from 2002-2008, and was re-elected to Bar Council again serving from 2010-2016. Previously he served as a member of the Virginia State Bar Disciplinary Committee for the 5th district from 2000-2006, twice serving as secretary, and was also elected to serve as the Chair of the Virginia State Bar's Judicial Nominations Committee in 2008 and 2009, a committee to which he was initially selected as a member in 2007.
