Varun K. Aery

Varun K. Aery practices in the Firm's Complex Litigation, Pharmaceutical Products, and Toxic Torts & Products Liability groups.

Prior to joining the Firm, Mr. Aery was an Attorney Advisor at the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. In that role, he drafted final agency decisions, orders, and rulings for the Departmental Appeals Board related to Medicare and Medicaid terminations and appeals, federal exclusions, and healthcare billing privileges to assess compliance with federal program requirements on the part of healthcare providers and suppliers. He regularly analyzed the U.S. Social Security Act final and proposed federal regulations and federal register notices to support the Department’s mission to provide impartial, independent review of disputes under more than 60 statutory provisions. In his capacity, Mr. Aery became intimately familiar with the adjudication of federal enforcement actions brought against individual healthcare entities.

He previously worked for California Rural Assistance, Inc., where he conducted oral argument, examined witnesses, and determined case strategy for administrative hearings. Following law school, Mr. Aery worked as a Law Clerk for the Honorable Elizabeth C. Wingo, Superior Court of the District of Columbia. His responsibilities included drafting judicial orders resolving dispositive, discovery-related, and post-trial motions, as well as drafting substantive trial orders.

Prior to his clerkship, he spent a year in Phnom Penh, Cambodia as a Luce Fellow of the Henry Luce Foundation, where he trained researchers to write law and policy briefs for foreign ambassadors and members of the Cambodian Parliament. He also prepared a 20-year strategy plan for Future Forum, a Cambodian think tank. Mr. Aery received his J.D. from the University of California Davis Law School and his LL.M from the University of Michigan Law School. He authored four articles published in various law reviews. He graduated from the University of California, Berkeley with a B.A. in Political Science.

Mr. Aery is named to the 2023 Lawyers of Color's annual Hot List, which recognizes junior and mid-level attorneys, working in law firms, companies, and government agencies, who show promise in their careers and demonstrate a strong commitment to advancing diversity in the legal profession.
